Erebus
Erebus is a deep-survey station bolted to the line between day and night on an airless grey moon. It is contract day 4,051 of an original 730. Eight people live on it, with one service synthetic, a relief ship seventy-one hours out, and at the bottom of a shaft a thin seam of amber geometry that has been classed as geological for eleven years.
Then a last sample goes wrong, and the question stops being what the thing is. It becomes who decides what a person is worth, and in whose wording.
EXT. THE MOON EREBUS — DEEP SPACE
Black.
A grey moon rolls out of it, slow enough to feel permanent.
Airless. Nothing moves unless machinery makes it.
People
| Who | On Erebus |
|---|---|
| Mara Hale | Commander. Checks the air before the room |
| Ada Sael | Exobiologist. Runs a control on a sunrise |
| Jonas Vos | Planetary geologist. Carries a rejection letter |
| Castor | The station’s service synthetic |
| Pollux | The same model, at the helm of the Charon |
What it is about
Rules and names: wording written far away that keeps the blood off the page, and the people it lands on. And two machines, built the same, given the same instruction, that do not give the same answer.
Where it stands
The third draft, a rewrite, is from September 2026. I’ll write about the next one in the log.
